I was appointed to serve as the Secretary of Education in February. I have actively participated in education policy for more than thirty years. I have been unequivocal about education reform and the need for every parent to have reasonable choices on their children’s education. I chose to set the pace for the reform movement in the education sector long before I came here.

My political career started in college. I have been in charge of various political campaigns, political action committees, the Republican Party in Michigan and many other party groups and political activities. My husband, Dick DeVos, ran for the governor position in Michigan in 2006.

Besides my cabinet position, I am involved in running our family business, the Windquest Group, an investment management firm I co-founded with my husband in 1989 in Michigan. Through the business, we have interests in technology, clean energy, and manufacturing among other sectors.

Betsy Devos have served as a mentor in Michigan public schools. This gave me insightful exposure to the various elements in the education system and refreshed my perspective on education. I support frameworks that empower parents to choose where their children learn. Where you live or how much income you have should not be the deciding factor in the quality of education your children receive. They should be guaranteed of top-notch education that puts them on the global map to realize successful careers.

I am also passionate about aligning higher education to the needs of the job market. I stand for choice in education. I have held various management roles in the education sector. I head the American Federation for Children. I am also associated with the Alliance for School Choice. I played a key role in getting Michigan to pass the first charter-school law in 1993.

I established a political action committee to push for education reform in Michigan to expand charter schools in 2001. My experience through the political action committee enabled me to take on the challenge to a national level. I remain optimistic about education reform, and its benefits to parents. The education reform movement is quickly gaining ground as more states sign up to our programs.

To achieve success, we need to mobilize informed lawmakers. We must empower them to champion our cause, pass the necessary laws and follow through with the implementation. The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund Aims To Help Give A Voice To Victims Of Racial Discrimination

With the current political scenario in the United States, several organizations and groups have been sprouting up all over to fight against the injustice that is caused to them. Different communities all over America are facing widespread oppression which has mainly been caused by individual members of society, and their biased opinions towards certain communities.

Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is one organization that stands to help people who are faced with racial oppression and to give a voice to the individuals who have had any injustice inflicted upon them through no fault of their own.

The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund was formed as a result of an incident that happened in 2007. Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin were two people of Hispanic heritage who were working for a media house at that time.

The incident took place in the state of Arizona. Being a part of a widespread news publishing company, Lacey and Larkin were the victims of racial discrimination, brought out by the then head sheriff of Arizona, Joe Arpaio. Joe was known to be one of the toughest people in Arizona and was known for bringing justice to many illegal immigrants during his tenure. However, on further inspection of the people that he served justice to, people started noticing a pattern.

This was being pointed out by several news agencies, including the one that Lacey and Larkin were working for. The claims suggested that Arpaio was, in fact, a person who was against people of Hispanic heritage residing in the United States. Arpaio apparently denied this, but then started targeting people who had been part of these claims, bringing Lacey and Larkin into his limelight.

In October of 2007, Lacey and Larkin were detained by the state police and taken into custody. They weren’t told what they were being arrested for and were kept in extremely harsh circumstances. They were maintained in this state for 48 hours, after which news of the arrest started spreading like wildfire.

When Arpaio was asked about this, he said that the reason for their detention was for ‘writing.’ Since everyone living in the country has a right to freedom of expression, it wasn’t a valid justification for their arrest, because of which Arpaio had to release them.

However, Lacey and Larkin weren’t one’s to take this lightly and wanted to bring to light the discrimination that people from Latin America witness on a daily basis. Numerous people from the community are targeted, and they left helpless, without a place to go, since people like Arpaio exist in the police force.

They, therefore, filed a suit against Joe, and subsequently won, causing Joe to have to step down from his position. Lacey and Larkin thereon decided that they would use the money to ensure that never again does someone in the state of Arizona has to go through what they went through, and hence the reason for the establishment of the fund. Their ultimate aim is to create an environment where people from Latin America can co-exist in harmony, and not have to endure racial discrimination.
