The Inception of the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund
Village Voice Media and Phoenix New Time’s famed co-founders, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, donated their settlement money to migrant rights organizations all over Arizona. The whooping $3.75 million settlement money came from their arrest by Sheriff Joe Arpaio from Maricopa County. The two journalists were taken into custody from their homes at midnight on October 18, 2007.
The two talented journalists had uncovered grand jury proceedings that looked for reporters’ notes, which talked about the Sherriff. They also found out that the grand jury had demanded to know the citizens who had read online articles about the Sherriff on New Times stories. Lacey and Larkin sued Maricopa County for the above offenses. Moreover, they were committed journalists who asserted and defended the First Amendment rights.
The two journalists founded an organization called the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund that aims to support groups in Arizona advocating for migrant, civil, and human rights as well as freedom of speech and civic participation.
